I Love To Shop More Than To Shot

Last week I was at Bangkok, Thailand to attend an Animation Workshop.
for this very special occasion, I crocheted an orangutan doll, named Choco-Strawberry.
I'd like to bring Pinkong, but I only have a small baggage, I don't have time to go to Bandung and borrow bigger baggage.
I didn't bring a lot of clothes cause I spare some space at my briefcase just in case I buy some souvenirs.
Guess what,  I shop a lot of things, even the shopping bag is heavier than my baggage.
And I have a confession to make.  Before I go to Bangkok, I borrowed a monopod from my dad, and I bought a shutter remote.  I also bring a compact digital camera.
I was planning to make a lot of picture of me (of course), and the picture of Choco-Strawberry in exotic places in Bangkok.
but I didn't.
so I guess, I love to shop more than to shot :p

Do You Remember Nody The Orangutan boy?

I barely remember to update my blog, and actually I should have updated this blog 2-3 weeks ago but I got a deadline.

Finally it's over! YAY!
(it's kinda sad actually, after spending a year working with the same client and then it's over, but I'll move on)
This morning I thought of making a new amigurumi, but I can't find THAT yarn with THAT particular color shade so ...

WAIT, that's not what this post was meant to be!
Okay, back to business.  Do you remember Nody?
2-3 weeks ago I received a newsletter from BOSF.
Nody is now a big boy, he has graduated from the forest school and he is ready to go to the pre-release island.  one step closer to be a free orangutan :)
thanks for participating on the orangutanku project and of course thanks for the BOSF (The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation).

okay.. now let's back to the yarn and needle business
but later, after I have some coffee.

Say Hi to Pinkong!

After I made the first big orangutan, I thought of making my own orangutan.  Well it's no longer the traditional orangutan cause it has to be Pink.
So I'm using the free yarn from @RajutanMama , I have started crochet this pink orangutan since March.
I even brought it along during my trip. From Jakarta to Solo (by Train) and then Solo to Jakarta.
then left it for a while because I'm out of yarn.

then continued finishing it again, I brought it along in my trip from Jakarta to Malang and to Jakarta again. I thought I would finish it by the time I arrived in Malang, so I can took picture with her at the Batu Secret Zoo and Prigen Safari Park but I wrong.

I brought it along to my work everyday, which was silly, cause I don't crochet/ knit during workhours.
I just brought it along wherever I go, and I tried to finish it whenever I have time to finish it.
And I just finish it, a few hours ago while waiting for the Job interview.  Stress crocheting, you called it.

I name her Pinkong (Pink - Kingkong), cause she's not really an orangutan.  When I was working on her, people kept asking, "What orangutan? but it's Pink and Black!"

Finally, we could snap a picture of us together today :)

Orangutanku #12: Mega

I've been thinking to continue my orangutanku project for time, but there are too many amigurumi project I'd like to do that I forget to continue this project.
Last January, Molly e-mailed me and asked me about Gede but in a bigger version. I thought: Good Idea!  Why not?  Orangutanku always be my favorite project to work on, and I've been wanting to make big amigurumi for a long time, so it would be a double fun project :)
So,I spent my February working on the biggest amigurumi ever.  I never counted that much stitches in a round before.  I took many pictures together with the Orangutan before I send it to Molly, so I won't miss it later.  I don't know the official name for the Big Orangutan, it's up to Molly to name it, but every orangutan needs a name, so I name it Mega, cause it is big.
in Indonesia, Mega also means Cloud, and I think a nature-themed name suits the orangutan perfectly.  and by the way, Mega also a name of Indonesian first female president.

Mega and Ginanjar

My two favorite things :)

Me, Mega and Uke
(one more picture before Mega take a long trip to Molly's place)

Orangutanku #11 1/2 : Mini Orangutan

I recently getting older.
Got a back pain, stiff arms, and a creativity block.
(sigh!)

Since I'm living at Jakarta, I don't read newspaper and I don't watch TV cause there's no TV and newspaper.
The internet connection is so limited in my place, I could only read some news from the newsfeed from social medias, not the most reliable source, but it's better than nothing.

I found out that recently Indonesian people started to care (more) about Orangutans, because of some bad incidents exposed.  I hope it would rise people awareness to save orangutan and you might find some more effective way to help than my Orangutanku project.

wanna save Orangutans? grab your phone/ smartphone and find your way to help them :)

Wanna Save Orangutans? Go browse the net, there's a lot of way to save them!

right now, I'm unable to make Orangutanku doll because I don't have the materials so I made a mini orangutan. Using Anna Hrahovec's tiny amigurumi technique, I knit the mini orangutan.
It took 2 days to make it, a lot much longer than usual, and a hell of back pain cause I don't have a couch to sit on while knitting, but it was nothing compared to the people at the orangutan conservatory have done.  I'm proud of them :)

Orangutan #10: Doutzen

it's orangutan's time again!
my friend Prue requested to adopt a yellow orangutan

Prue is my friend since elementary school, junior high then college
if it weren't because of her suggestion, I might not take the school art test for the second time after failed the first one.
I might finished the management school, become a manager or marketing person.
Thanks to her now I'm actually an animator and made this blog :)
Prue is a news reporter, a twitter-holic, and recently has a blog too.
and by the way, she's a good painter/ artist too, hopefully one day she has a time to paint again.

so here's Doutzen, the Yellow orangutan
I've made a yellow orangutan before, so this time I used another kind of yellow

Doutzen is a shy orangutan, but she loves camera a lot!

Doutzen's favorite time: Daydreaming time!

You could also adopt your own orangutan dolls in your favorite color or in the original color (brown-red brown).
By adopting an orangutan doll you could help real orangutan at the conservatory
read here for more informations or read the post under orangutanku labels for updated news.

Orangutanku #0 : Nody

remember my orangutanku project?

I was planning to make about 26 orangutan dolls last year and sell it to adopt a real orangutan on the shelter.

I failed making all 26 orangutan dolls before the end of 2010, and I don't think that I will try reaching the target this year.
it's not because I stopped to care, but there's a new project waiting. I would still gladly make you an orangutan doll and the 15% gained from the adoptional fee would belong to the real orangutan at the shelter as a donation.  So the different is I would only make orangutan dolls by order.

Failed to reach the target, doesn't mean failed reaching the goal.
Here's the good news, I finally adopted Nody, a 3 years old orangutan boy via BOSF.

He's cute, right?

for now I only adopted Nody for 3 months period, but I think I will continue the adoption after the next 3 months.  BOSF sent me the story of Nody, so it's like I have a kid, paying for his food, but takes no responsibility (which is FUN!).  like my sister said, at least we know our money used for something good.

So... if you are thinking to spend your money for a good cause, you might try adopting orangutans.

by the way, when I started the orangutanku project, I made a prototype, which I really love and I kept for myself. therefor you won't see him available for adoption.

Now I name this orangutan doll Nody, like my real orangutan boy :)

special thanks to Uli and Indra who already adopted orangutan dolls.

PS: will announce the new project soonish ;)
PSS: it's Nody, Not Yadi!

Orangutanku #9: Budi

If you learn to write and read in Bahasa, the first sentences you'll learn would be:
ini Budi
ini ibu Budi
(translation: this is Budi, This is Budi's Mom)

ini Ya Budi

Budi is a common name in Indonesia, at least 10-20 years ago.
Now, Budi is a rare (antique) name, since Indonesian parents love to give unique names, mostly western name with wrong spelling.
since there is basically no rules on giving family name, you could name your kids whatever you like.
You like Star Wars, you could name your kid Darth Vader, seriously.

accidentally, this month themes beside Dad's birthday and Halloween there is also yellow theme.
I made yellow chicken, yellow orangutan, and a yellow....

Ya Budi suka pisang

...Banana.
the banana was made using a pattern from a book.
it's weird working using someone's pattern, it less fun than free styling :p

Oh, almost forgotten,
Budi is available for adoption for 90000 IDR :)
as usual 10% gained from the adoption would be saved for the Orangutanku Project.

The banana and the shipment cost not included
the special offers is still available ;)

just in case you are curious, Budi suka pisang means Budi likes Banana.

UPDATE October 27 2010 : Budi is sold (wait a minute it sounded bad, but yes He is sold)

Orangutanku #8: Sekar

I just went back from my fun vacation to Bali.
There's a lot of places I haven't go to in Indonesia, but Bali is definitely my favorite.
I could write a loooooong story about my vacation but not in this blog :)

Before went to Bali, I made this special orangutan.
Since Bali is famous for the exotic sunny beach, I made Sekar, the shocking pink orangutan.
Sekar is a nice traveling friend :)
Put her on your bag  and she won't complain, as long as you take her to interesting places.

Sekar waiting for the delayed plane

Kuta Beach, the perfect place to get tanned :)

Sekar prefers hanging at the Kambojas Tree, than hanging out at the club

The beaches are cool, but I don't mind swimming at the lotus pool

Sekar available for adoption for 170000 IDR
15% gained from the adoption will be saved for the OrangUtanku Project
(Updated December 22, 2011 : Sekar now staying with my niece, Kiko)

PS: interested to have another orangutan doll with different color variation? just tell me :)

Felipe on Tour

last night when I was going to bed, I checked my inbox once again by my phone
what a wonderful surprise, there is an e-mail from Felipe's master, Ulrich Kleffel :

Hi Dessy,

today we made a little tour with Felipe.

We took our bikes and visited a small castle in the neighbourhood:

After feeding some ducks we picked some sunflowers.

The sign is saying "We may be picked. 30 cent/piece".

Bye,
Uli

I was unable to open the picture on my phone, therefor, I had to wait until I went to the studio on the next morning, such a long wait.
But once I saw it, it really made my Monday Morning :)
Thank you very much, Uli!

Now, aren't you agree, Felipe is very lucky to have a very kind master?

By the way, it disturb me a little bit (in funny way), Felipe ride a bike, while me...
well...
I can't ride a bike
don't tell anyone! it's a secret!

Orangutanku #7: Hanoman

Almost failed my one amigurumi every week
Not that I didn't have time to make amigurumi,  but because there were a priority list.
anyway, I added a new page here since last month, a W.A.I.D.R.N page,  so you could check what am I currently doing.  Or to be exact what crochet project I am currently doing.

Here's the orangutanku #7: Hanoman,  the white orangutan.
China have Sun Go Kong (a.k.a Sun Wu Kong or Sun Go Ku) the monkey king from Journey to the West.
India have Hanuman from the Ramayana, the epic story, which is also well known in Indonesia.
In Indonesian version, Hanuman is Hanoman or Anoman, the white and mighty monkey.

I knew monkeys are different to apes, orangutan is an ape, not a monkey :)
I made this orangutan doll not based on the Hanoman story, I just wanted to make her white, the name came out later.
The real Hanoman have a black and white checkered cloth and a crown (and have a mighty power of course).

Hanoman the orangutan doll available for adoption for IDR 170000
15% will be saved for the real orangutan at the conservatory

and by the way I'm thinking of making more colorful orangutan dolls, any suggestion?
Because all I think is pink orangutan :p

Orangutanku #6: Upik

This orangutanku project is probably my most ambitious project I ever made.
I meant, making at least 27 dolls for adopting one real orangutan.
Upik is my 7th Orangutanku dolls.  The first orangutanku doll is not available for adoption yet, that's why this post title is Orangutanku #6 not #7.
Honestly, I'm bored of using the same pattern and the same yarns after making my 5th orangutanku dolls.
as you see Felipe has different color combination, now Upik too has another color combination.
I wanted to make her black like the gentle gorilla, but too much black yarns makes my eyes sore.
So I chose gray and black.

And, I made a little experiment, I put Upik in a cage.

She's gone mad, and show some teeth.

err... Okay She's very angry so I released her.

Nothing changed. She still mad at me.
She doesn't trust me anymore.

Lesson learned: Do not keep orangutans or any other wild creatures as domestic pets.
They are belong to the wild, no matter how cute they are.

Upik available for adoption for IDR215000,
15% will be saved for the real orangutan adoption

Orangutanku report #1

Here's a good news, Felipe finally has a new home!
Maybe now he is trying the local beer and watching football with his new owner
I believe it's a very nice place to stay.

(image from Wikipedia)

beautiful isn't it?  Felipe is so Lucky!

by the way, as promised, 15% (IDR22500) gained from the adoption is saved for adopting real orangutan.
I need IDR600000 for adopting the real orangutan via BOS, means I need your help to adopt about 25 (or more) orangutanku dolls.
for now I have made 7, so I have to make at least 20 more orangutanku dolls... oh still a long way to go

by the way, it's not about the orangutan but check this out ;)

OrangUtanku #5: Felipe

I cheated, this is not really an orangutan because of its colors.
Let's say Felipe is a far relative of the orangutans, and He wants to help the orangutans too.
I just finished Felipe last night during Worldcup match Brazil Vs Netherland
Before the game started, I said to my sister that I would name the Orangutan after the first player who get a red card.
My favorite teams, France and all the Asian teams have lost the game, so I was not picking any side anymore, just watching.

What the real Felipe did during the last game was silly, suicide goal and red card, and I was kinda worry about naming this orangutan after him.
But after doing some googling, I found that Felipe is a good player (come on He is from the Brazil team!), no matter how bad his reputation now, I hope he will do better in the future :)

Back to the star here, Felipe the orangutan is available for adoption for 170000 IDR
This Felipe is supporting the Orangutanku project too, so 15% from the adoption gains will be donated to the real Orangutan
If you don't like Felipe's, just give him a cuter and lovable new name once he is yours
tho I think Felipe is still a good name :)

BTW, real orangutans not always eating bananas, they eat mostly fruits even durians (yup, that stinky fruit!), and sometimes they eat insects as proteins.

UPDATE (07/07/2010):  Felipe has found his new home!!! I'll make an update later about the 15% for the real orangutan

OrangUtanku #4: Jerry

Do you remember Ginanjar?
Jerry is Ginanjar's Brother

Made by exactly same ingredient and same amount of love.
let's say, they are same species, and there will be more Orangutan dolls like them.

But handmade dolls are never identical, Jerry is very special

He was born as a clown, the kind one, not the scary one :)
Jerry is an active and acrobatic Orangutan.
Jerry has a slightly problem with his eyes, but it doesn't stop him from swinging from trees to trees.

He's rarely go down from the trees, but He would be more than happy to stay with you for 90000 IDR (adoption fee, 10% belongs to the real Orangutan at the conservatory)

Ginanjar

Hmm.. maybe I'm being bad. (definitely I am)
I think this orangutan's face looked like one of my dearest friend.
And we used to say that she looked like Ginanjar, an actor/comedian.
Well I won't name the orangutan with my friend's name, so let's call the orangutan Ginanjar :)

see? his eyes are so Ginanjar-ish!
Ginanjar the Orangutan has a good sense of humor too

Ginanjar available for adoption for 150000 IDR
Get him fast, Ginanjar is famous :)
10% gained from the adoption will be saved for the real orangutan

PS: Dear friend, so sorry if you read this, I miss you to much, I see your face everywhere :-P

OrangUtanku #2: Orange

Meet Orange, the soft and kindhearted Orangutan.
She's a little bit shy but She's get along with people well.

She has black round eyes
She was made using imported Korean Yarn (they didn't tell me what its name)
The yarn was worsted to make it softer
She is 10 cm tall from the head to bottom (sitting position)
and 16 cm wide from arm to arm
Her color is the most similar to the orangutan character design on my animation.
The name Orange is taken from the animation character's name.

She's available for adoption for 200000 IDR
15% goes to the real Orangutan via BOS Foundation

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

OrangUtanku #1: Gede

I called this one "Gede" (means big), because she's the biggest of all OrangUtan dolls I ever made,
feel free to renamed her once she is yours :)
Gede is 9 cm tall (sitting position)
Gede is made using local cotton yarn and plastic brown eyes.

Gede available for adoption for 150000 IDR (check the currency here)

Orangutanku

Last year I went to the zoo and met the Orangutan.
Funny, we're both orang (people), and we're Indonesian.

Nothing wrong with that zoo but,
it makes me think of a lot of Orangutans back in Indonesia.
How they are threatened because of loosing their home.
I don't blame anyone for this, but I do want to help the Orangutans, and you can join me too.
Let's help the orangutan return to their home.

I'm making new series named OrangUtanku (my Pongo). I made Orangutan doll based on my character design for an animation. And they are available for adoptions. Every 10% earned from the doll adoptions will be saved to adopt real Orangutan via BOS.

While the real orangutan adoption means taking care of an orangutan's needs at the shelter for some period, OrangUtanku adoption means you'll get a cute and cuddly orangutan doll stay with you as long as you want. Please don't stop if you care and want to adopt real orang utan too and do not hesitate to link to this page or directly to BOS

Find out more about OrangUtanku here

PS: now I'm officially receive paypal too :)
